When most people think of an Integrated Operation Center (IOC) they think of a fancy room. A room that is filled with screens and state of the art technology. Technology that allows people in the center to perform complex tasks, like landing a spacecraft on the Moon. However, putting technology in a room does not solve complex tasks – people do.
For a center to work its purpose must be clearly defined. Why do you build an IOC? Should it cover a gap in today’s operations, or remove known pain-points? What work should be performed in it? How do the subject matter experts want to perform their work and what technology is needed? These requirements allow you to build your IOC brick-by-brick. But remember that the requirements will change over time. A key challenge is therefore flexibility.
At an early stage our Critical Performance Analysis (CPA) can help identify areas with the greatest potential for improvement. The identified areas are then further explored through a ways of working lab. The lab enables the users to pilot and test how the center will operate long before it is opened. In this way, the IOC technical design can be aligned with the work it is expected to perform.
